Father and son gathered by the hearth
Like two snowy owls in winter, huddling for warmth
Melting down the wax from every candle in their cell
Collecting forgotten fallen feathers from the windowsill
In a hushed voice the father says “We’ve but one chance to get this right.
We've only been given a small window from which to take our flight.”
The labyrinth he had built, had become their prison
And he knows that up is the only way out from within
The two men slip undetected out to the bay
And will be far above the kingdom by the break of day
They climb along the ramparts atop the ocean bluffs
And turn towards the open sea, as the sun comes up
The father warns his son not to stray off course
“No we mustn’t challenge nature to a game of brute force
Too high or too low might come at heavy cost
But the boy sheds his father’s warning as the two take off
The Aegean wind carries them
Safely to the clouds
But a voice within the boy
Begins to grow too loud
The angels taunt him
Why fear the sea beneath your feet
Or the sun above your crown
If your mortal wings can reach us
Won’t you join us… now!
The son departs the sheltered path his father forges in the sky
Soon he has strayed far off course and flown much too high
As Phaethon’s chariot descends, all have lost control
And now their fate rests in the hands of mighty Apollo
The wax begins to melt, the boy’s wings are unmade
The father can only watch as his son’s strength begins to fade
Man prays to guide his children home
Teach them well before they’ve grown
But if the roads we walk fork from the start
At Childhood’s End, we’ll only grow apart
So, like Daedalus, we must stand alone
And let our kin fly on their own
Now Icarus falls and cries in vain
Into the sea which bears his name

Rocket Summer
03:11
|
|||
The sun dog up in the Spielberg sky
Set the clouds off like a flame
It was a shot in the dark and it broke my heart
To see the winter end again
One more night without sunlight
With a new moon at its end
As the rockets take off and each day is lost
We can watch this new age begin
(Watch this new age begin)
There's an Indian Summer and you'll find out that it's getting hot
A Rocket Summer and the last ship, well it just took off
A Martian queen at only seventeen
The girl was in over her head
And as the weather gets hotter, we'll move down by the water
and I'll think of what she said
She said "If you can stay on the ground without messing around
I will have no reason to leave
But if you keep fooling around with your head in the clouds
I guess the Earth is not the place for me
(The Earth is no place for me)
There's an Indian Summer and you'll find out that it's getting hot
A Rocket Summer and the last ship, well it just took off
There will come, there will come soft rains
There will come, there will come soft rains
There will come, there will come soft rains
There will come, there will come soft rains
There's an Indian Summer and you'll find out that it's getting hot
A Rocket Summer and the last ship, well it just took off
A Rocket Summer and you'll find out that it's getting hot
An Indian Summer and the last ship, well it just took off

Wilhelmina

Wilhelmina
Swore I seen her
Slidin’ down the pole
But it coulda’
Been her daughter
I just don’t know
I was caught red handed
Apprehended
Hidin’ from the law
That's when I saw her
Looking like she
Did before
I said please, please have mercy on me
Spring my cage and set me free
Just once for old times sake
She said, "Sir, there must be some mistake."
Wilhelmina, I swear my outlook’s changed
I’m finished with cheating graves
Wilhelmina, don’t come down so hard
A man grows awful weary playing God

Garden Variety
03:13
|
|||
When you’ve spent all your life fighting guns against arrows
And you cut down the tree you once used for your gallows
Don’t try to convince us you’re not gonna shoot
We can tell, all too well, hatred stems from the roots
Now as you age and your gate narrows
We step in stride, you relinquish your battles
Your axe dulling more with every blow
And we, gaining strength with each new growth
We are all garden variety
We are all garden variety
We are all garden variety
Though we've strayed a long way from the start
Now your tree is picked bare and your homestead is barren
The lay of the land t'was sentenced to Adam
And nothing is new at least under the sun
It’s a rear mirror view of all things to come
So let the blind patriots clamor to talk first
We'll hide our subversive verses in the second verse
From the seeds of dissent the sprouts will break free
Watch them flower and writhe in the fecundity
We are all garden variety
We are all garden variety
We are all garden variety
Though we've strayed a long way from the start
We are all garden variety
We are all garden variety
We are all garden variety
Though we've strayed a long way from the start

The Plow
03:39
|
|||
On days when it rained
I could breathe easier
Like some heavenly love
Sent from above
And, in a way, I guess it was
I'm used to the clouds
Which blanket the fields
Blocking the sun
Keeping it from
Those for whom it comes
I'd gather my family
My two little girls
They must have feared
We gotten them in on
The last day in the world
There is no wind
Hanging still as can be
Soon there is no way to see
My own lantern
In front of me
I may be the plow that broke the plains
But it was you
You that held the rains/reins
You blamed us for this
From far-off places
Say there's a fix
But that it
Will uproot the little we have left
We broke our tills
To feed your great wars
Now there's no way to return
This here soil
To the way it was before
With each desiccated plot
That you forgot
Families lost
Into the dust
Swallowed up
How dare you suggest
We should leave
How can I not
Accept the lot
Placed in front of me
So on days when it rains
I can breathe easier
Salt of the earth
Fall to the earth
And weep, sky, weep
I may be the plow that broke the plains
But it was you, only you
You that held the rains/reins
I may be the plow that broke the plains
But it was you
You held the rains/reins

Peace Of Eight
03:11
|
|||
Break off and dive
Into the sea
Cool rush of water
Envelops me
Glitter of the sun
On the waves above
Masks the glow
That I give off
The years claim the youth
From my face
Weathered and worn
I lie misplaced
Laying in our bed
Under covers soon
In the pale glow
Of the moon
Facing towards the sky
For heaven’s sake
Too deep to fathom
The hour far too late
To make heads or tails
Of our fate
Resting evermore
In the peace of eight
Please, please
Pay no mind
Please, please
Pay me no mind

Ariel
04:13

We ain't got much in common
Still I never wonder why
For you I'd run
And bite my tongue
Until the day I die
I want to run off with you
Like water cuts through sand
Make the world stop
Get off this rock
Into your arms again
It's just as well
For you I fell
Ariel
Though we may feel so far off
From the place we love
But in the sea
No tears there be
That we can't overcome
So you can ride the waves
While I sink like a stone
But I would dive right in
And sink or swim
Wherever you are is my home
It's just as well
For you I fell
Ariel
Caught between our two worlds
Seems like they are tearing us apart
But you and I
Will turn the tide
That swells in every heart
For you, I'd cross the oceans
For you, I'd brave the sea
I'd hear your call
And trade it all
Give up the air I breathe
It's just as well
For you I fell
Ariel
